The War Wagon

Okay, so for some time I have promised some pictures of my rides. Unfortunately my work horse Surly met an untimely demise, but I'm sure I have some older pics somewhere. I will also be posting the breakage and the creation of the SS converted Karakoram...much like MC7's.

So here's the War Wagon (older model Bianchi touring bike) at work. I have since replaced the saddle. The Selle Italia Bianchi edition saddle looked sweet, but it felt like I was sitting on a jagged brick. She's the beaut' that gets me to and fro on my commute of approximately 29 miles round trip.

Bike parking at work. Not under cover, but it's a start.

The route to work. Mostly the last two miles. This doesn't depict the somewhat bustling country road that encompasses the majority of my trek, but it really is the nicest part of my ride, pretty countryside which I can slow down ( a little) and enjoy...horses, old barns, green fields.

This picture does no justice. This is a steep hill at the end of the ride. after you get past the elipse of the first section of road, it drops off pretty significantly. If you look hard enough you can see the road again a little below the center of the picture.

More pictures of family, friends, bikes, trips, general good times, and my beautiful wifey to come.

Also a decision has almost been reached with my new bike. I believe I'll be going the 29er SS route...The GF Rig! A little more research needs to be done first.

Rainy Saturday Rainy

No Gambrill
No Single Speed
No Wife
No Crap

I'm a little bored today. We had a nice little Saturday planned until God decided otherwise. I was scrambling to piece together a bike for the Gambrill trip. The Karakoram was about to adorn the Empress' (my Surly's) Old Clothes. Then the weather report kicked in and the Gambrill trip was held until November. So no Gambrill.

Yes, the Flying Monkey is a goner. I'll miss her, but a timely phone call from my pops put a little kick in my step. Can you say Christmas present? Gotta love supportive parents who understand where I come from. Now I get to do some soul searching/bike shopping. But still...No Single Speed.

My wife and I were supposed to do movie and dinner last night, but high pressure systems kick her hiney with major headaches (I type with soft fingers this morning). Hoping she feels better so we can head out this evening. But until then...No Wife.

What's a kid to do? Dust off the ol' Cyclo Core video and get my ass handed to me by Graeme Street...you evil bastard. The video workout definitely has shown me that my pain threshold is a lot higher then I thought and the rewards for pushing yourself are endless. Other than that, do some well needed cleaning and playing with Cobi!

Wet Commute

I woke up yesterday having watched the weather report late the night before. Skies are crispy and clear! A little cold, but tolerable. So I head in to work. Feeling great! A Senior VP catches me in the parking lot and said what a wonderful way to start the day. Indeed, it is!

So, the day dredges on and I look out the window in anticipation for my ride home. What are all these dark clouds about? Hmmm. I check out accuweather.com and low and behold rain. I'm not afraid of riding in the rain, but I do fear the drivers. So I ask my boss if I could shove out a little early. With great delight, she said yes. So I get ready to roll out of the parking lot and here comes the rain! Not the typical warm tropical showers of late spring and summer, but the first cold rain of the season. The first couple of minutes were a shock to the system.

Well at least it was 3 o'clock, not too many cars on the road. Wrong. Now what we have are big ol' school busses. Gotta love the ever changing world of commuting.

Got home to a big ol' pasta dinner and a warm shower.

Gambrill isn't looking too good this weekend...updates to come.

Initiation Night for Camma Krakka Frama

Rest in Peace Flying Monkey

To those who don't know, The Flying Monkey said goodbye last night at the Loch Raven Reservoir Bridge Trail. She, a Surly 1x1, had a strong run, but alas her poor ol' heart..er..chainstay coudn't handle the pounding it has received over the years. You see...she was a rescue. A poor slob couldn't take care of her any longer, so I took her under my wing no questions asked. My guess is that she didn't get her shots (of rustproof on the inside of the frame). She held up for 4 to 5 good years with nary a complaint. Her untimely demise was quick and painless (for both of us), but the emotional trauma still is lingering. Her last words were "keep on single speedin' good buddy...keep on keepin' on. I'll miss you Miss Flying Monkey...godspeed!

[Insert Boys II Men's Goodbye to Yesterday]

Now on to look for other SS's. Do I go 29 or stay 26? Surly or Vicious? Go broke or broker? Damn the decisions. When I was a single lad without many priorities the decision was easy. Maybe it's time to get that part time job and build my dream SS. Until then, I think I'm going to convert an old frame so I have something to do during the winter. And you thought you were sent to pasture Kara! My GT Karakoram is coming out of retirement! Okay, I gotsta talk about something else.

The commute today was chilly and somehow I managed to go .4 miles less than usual which I am baffled by...must be a computer glitch. forgot to strap on the arm warmers and paid on the 25-35 mph descents. But after a while the wool got warmed up and the fleece although bulky was appreciated...it seemed like I was still in bed. I saw another biker on the road today. I thought it was a co-worker so I amped up my pace to catch up, which never happened. I saw a red Trek VW jersey, which makes me think it could have been Chris Eatough because he lives out this way. And no, I never even got close. The person took off like fire! My gut says Chris, but odds say Trek VW wearing road general (I was going to poser, but the dude was flying!)

New in the musical rotation is Reverend Run's Distortion. It takes me back to the Raising Hell days, when my brother and I would be playing marathon games of MicroLeague Baseball and in between innings pretending to be Jam Master Jay. The CD is relatively short, but packed with a ton of old school flavor...my favorite being his tribute to Jay with Lynard Skynard's Sweet Home Alabama as the hook. I'm not sure what the connection between the two are, but the lyrics are great and the music is...well...legendary. A great mix of rock and rap...something Run DMC started (or at least brought to the mainstream)...Limp Bizkit who? Maybe the connection is that both group lost the heart and soul of their bands in such a tragic and unnecessary fashion...Oh well, I don't typically dote on musical interpretation too often.

Hop thanks for the CD! And for finding me in the forest last night...I will never take the "shortcut" again.

Stay the essense of pulchritudiness, ya'll.

Up that hill!

THIS JUST IN: I broke 1,000 hits on my website...rock on RideCam!!

Oy...the ride home last night seemed like it took forever and a day!! I had the cyclometer on for the ride home just so I could gauge mileage and see my top speed...I am sort of a speed freak. I wasn't riding for time though. Just get my butt from point A to point B. I rolled in the middle chainring for the entire ride...Lance style. It felt like I was dragging arse through the backroads. When I got back to the truck, it seemed like my time was the worst ever. Oddly enough I posted a 52 minute ride...which I believe is a personal best for me on the ride back.

The last hill into Glyndon proved to be a grinder which had me standing and mashing...hellish!

The good news is that the Smartwool rocks! The midweight LS is toasty when cold , breathable when warm. It also seems like the sweat acts as another thermal layer. Most synthetics chill to the bone on longer road efforts. Damn, I should get sponsored by Smartwool :) No seriously...that would be great.

It's been awhile...I missed ya!

So, what's been going down since we last spoke? Hmm. I had a brief hiatus from the bike and running due to some slight knee aggravation and the 90 feet of rain we received last week!! I hopped on the bike on Friday to commute into work and the "big" hill seemed twice as long.

Saturday, I rocked out with Hoppe and Volk-man at the Maryland Brewers Association's Oktoberfest drinking the finest of swill from the area's brewmasters. Clay Pipe once again proved to be the brew of choice. They had all of their guns blazing - 1andDone, Pursuit of Happiness, Backfin, Blue Tractor, etc. I just wished they would bottle more of their beer. I guess we'll just have to pick up pony kegs. Hoppe was having his way with pumpkin ales in a pursuit to find the finest gourded nectar...I think we decided that Ellicott Mills reigned supreme, while Red Brick should have their pumpkin (ale) smashed. I was hoping it was a tainted keg, but round two much later proved otherwise.

We ended up hanging out and listen to music and Kirk (from the 98 RockMorning show) MC the Beer Belly and Ms. Oktoberfest contest. The Beer Belly winner was an absolute anomaly. His gut hung past his knees...no lie. Matt was given a free pass to punch me directly in the face if I ever got to that point. We got to talk to Kirk for a little while too. What a cool, very approachable guy...he actually walked over to us...he's funny as hell.

After we had our fill, Volk coersed (yeah right) to going to Recher theatre to enjoy some reggae-ish/311-ish music from Colouring Lesson. We grabbed some grub at CVP and hit the first act, Can't Hang...pretty decent. After Colouring Lesson, the Big Hurt came on and their name is spot on...so we rolled. Volk...you deserve a medal for taking care of us two goons...sincere thanks!

Sunday...Cammy sleepy, no ridey to Walkersville like he wanted to. Hung out with my fam and other relatives...most notably my cousin and her baby daughter, Julia...What a sweetheart. We also celebrated my Aunt Dixie's birthday which is tomorrow. We all enjoyed the fruits of my mom's labor in the kitchen. She made a Thanksgiving feast, which is exactly what I needed!!

I commuted today as well, took some pictures of my route which I'll post later. I wore my Smartwool long sleeve and REI fleece vest. The Smartwool is toasty, but I'll need to get a wind jacket or vest. While the fleece is nice, it gets too soggy and heavy.

Hop and I are investigating the world of home brewing...more to come!

Gambrill Saturday? Indeed wit da Single Speed...big hurt!

Until next time RideCam reader's...have a beer for me..

The Saturday Edition of Fish Fry Friday

Today is phenomenally nasty. I think the weather is yen/yang-ing. Dry for over 6 weeks...over 3 inches of rain in 24 hours. Doesn't make for the nicest of outdoor weather, but there is work to do inside.

Last night was the first official Fish Fry Friday at the Chesnik's of Owing Mills. Mom and Pop came over and we surprised them with an authenic fish fry like the dinners we attended in Milwaukee in years past. It started off with my parents entrance to traditional Croatian music, mainly tamburitzan. They were definitely surprised. Foodwise we started with cheese and crackers and tomato foccacia. And since it's October and all, we had an assortment of seasonal and Oktoberfest beers. Dinner was made with the ladies sitting and talking in the living room and the guys in the kitchen. Pop sat in the rocker enjoying the fine nectars presented to him while I christened the new Lodge Dutch Oven. The dinner menu consisted of fried cod, cole slaw, potato wedges and apple sauce...relatively easy, but everyone enjoyed the fare. The night was capped off with some apple foccacia and cheese.

The rest of the night we talked and enjoyed the music and our gift of gab. We sent them on the way with hugs and kisses and a CD of the music we listened to during the evening.

This morning K's brother and friend stopped over so we could give him his birthday present. His band is making a demo CD and they were on their way to the studio. Afterwards, I taught K how to make coffee...strong, and we had breakfast together. Pretty nice start to the weekend...rain and all.

Stay classy.

Damn you weather..damn you to hell!

THIS JUST IN: Let the revolution begin and I told you so!

Gasoline demand destruction is slowly but surely going to take place and biking will be one critical element to the reduction of our crude oil addiction. Yes...I'm Pot...Hello Kettle!

So I get prepped for my morning commute and it is dark. I can handle that. As I walk the dog the sun is making it's way into the morning sky...fantastic. But there's a thick fog...hmmm. It will burn off. I get ready...the fog slightly burns off...at least enough so there is proper visibility. It's on! My wife calls..."It's sprinkling enough that I have to use my wipers". Damn...that's it! Too many chances for error. Fog + wet roads + wet windshields + windy backroads + an ominous forecast = trail run or core workout tonight.

I am definitely tweaking to get back on my regular commuting schedule.

Hop has finished his new SS steed. He is temporarily disgruntled with the geared world and the crap his Trek was giving him. So he took matters and the bike in his own hands and crafted a beauty. Check it out here.

I hit another trail run at Soldiers Delight...This time I hit the Newtown side of the trail. Nice to mix it up.

We will be taking a spin this weekend I'm sure if we don't get washed out by the possible 5 inches of rain I heard about on the news today. We need, but I don't want it!!

Join the movement!!

Solo on the Single

I hit Loch last night all by my lonesome, which is nice every once in a while. I started at a nice clip before running into an old riding buddy. Magic Mike was rocking a fixed gear Karate Monkey, which to the untrained is an insane way to ride the trails. It would be one thing if the trail was just fireroad, but he was scorching the obstacle-laden singletrack as well. Hopefully we will reconnect...this will surely blow my current riding mates' minds.

Apparently he rides fixie exclusively now with a KM and an old Panasonic fixed rig in his stable. Definitely minimizing the maintenance, which allows for more fancy parts purchases.

My ride ended at the brink of dusk. I will definitely be mounting the light on my helmet from now on. I hate having to turn around on account of darkness.

Do not adjust your monitor:

Of being a gentleman

I favor myself prevailingly as a gentleman. Even when I'm on the trails. If I see someone in need, I stop to ask if they need help. If someone is stranded and needs a tube or a shot from my CO2 pump, I don't think twice. However, when I am rolling at a decent clip up a hill, I usually (as trail etiquette states) take the right of way. Much like the scenario last night. I was riding with Hop at Loch and I come upon two riders after a decent who were stopped in the trail. They said one more rider. I look up and see only Hoppe, so I continue on. I peak a smallish hill and hear "you're no gentleman" from one of the guys and then I see a woman who wasn't even clipped in yet who was attempting to restart.

Well sir, you don't know me....and indeed I am a gentleman. Just ask me Ma! I treat women with respect but when you strap on a helmet you are no longer classified by gender, rather you're a rider. Everyone following the same set of basic rules for a common end and that is riding your damn bike...What was I talking about???

The trail ride was fast and fun. The singlespeeds are a welcomed change. Just you and the bike working together to peak ascents, scale decents, absorb root and rock and methodically tuning mind and muscle to adjust for the ever changing terrain. Sound difficult? I used to think the KISS method was Keep It Simple Stupid, but now it also means Keep It Single Speed. Simplicity at its finest.

Be looking for the wisdom of Shih Tzu Propaganda coming soon....

She's a witchy woman

So I discuss Brewer's Alley yesterday and in comes my wife from a business meeting with a growler filled with the sweet nectar that is Kolsh!! That's fantastic!! A little on this tasty little number:
This style originated in the area of Cologne, Germany. It exhibits the more desirable features of both ales and lagers. Our Kölsch is pale gold with light body and a slightly dry palate. It has a mild bitterness and delicate hop aroma. This beer is a clean and pleasant thirst quencher, which earned a Bronze Medal at the 1998 Great American Beer Festival. 4.6 - 5.0% alcohol, by volume.

In other news...I ran. The light doesn't kick out much light. My pops suggested that I use the red insert. Hopefully it makes an improvement. Right now the light is washing everything out making the variation in terrain very hard to read. Not a good thing when running.

Hop and I will be at it again tonite at Loch Raven. Weather should be cool. That's all for now!

Blazing Single Barrells

Loch Raven was set ablaze last night with the vicious assault of the single dingas! Hoppe and I killed it last night with nary an issue. I was taking some hills that I haven't been able to conquer this year...holla! Hoppe still set a feverish pace, but I was able to keep better tabs on him. Maybe the kid is getting all grows'd up!

I saw 229 on the blubber scale this morning and dropping...not bad for a kid who was 270 ten months ago. Sure I give the credit thus far to myself, but I have an awesome group of friends that have helped me along the way with the motivation I needed. Watch out 200...I'm coming for ya!!!

A part of my weight loss regimen has been to cut back on the wobbly pops, so I have made a trade-off. No more "regular" beers. Gots to treat myself right. So I have a new found friend in Rogue's HazelNut Brown Nectar. Tasty as a muv! I've also hit up a few other Rogue selections including: Dead Guy Ale and the Mocha Porter - both delicious brews. I will try to make my way through all of the available 22 oz selections. They have a great attitude towards beermaking with a handcrafted mentality that seeps into each beer I've imbibed. Their beers aren't like the others!

Kris and I are hitting In the Streets this weekend. With great weather and good friends, we should have a wonderful time with all the music and food and, oh yeah, Brewers Alley. Yes...more beer talk. But this is where I cut my teeth on good beer.

Until next time...stay sexy RideCam readers.

Let it Rain

We haven't seen rain in a while in these parts. Last night the skies opened up. I still went on my trail run...rain and all. It felt refreshing. It felt like my old club soccer days in high school when we practiced rain or shine. The smell of the wet earth was sweet.

I opted to do some hill repeats. Two in the beginning and three at the end. The rest of the run was pretty smooth. I brought along the Petzl and it got some use at the end of my run. I'm not sure if it's exactly what I want/need. Yes, it does give off some decent light, but not enough for my usage. It is better suited for night hiking or camping. I may have to return the light. I'll give it one more whirl. It said it threw light up to 17 meters (rough guesstimate 50 feet)...it felt more like 15 feet. We'll see. Maybe the rain had something to do with it, but I intend to occassionally use it in the rain.

After my run, I hopped into the truck and headed home to whip up some stuffed salmon from Trader Joe's. I liked it, wifey not so much. Oh well. Next time I take her to Trader Joe's to pick something that she likes!

Cobi Joan is now a caged animal. She has been relegated to the kitchen during the work day. She has been a bad girl around the house, so she has free reign in the kitchen. Note: K and I have sometimes been bad parents by not coming home quickly after work, so we'll sit in the kitchen during the weekend :) Sorry Cobi girl!

The weekends are too short!

Saturday started with a Bike and Run at Loch Raven -Seminary. The cast of characters were Hoppe, Volk and myself. We hit the regular 10-12 mile loop. Hop and I rode single, while Volk was on his old trusty steed (he's still waiting on his SC Blur LT...4 months and counting!!).

Not too many surprises...Hoppe smoked us. We all made good times. After the ride we did a 2-2.5 mile trail run. Wow that was different. There definitely is an art to this that I will need to figure out. Maybe it's as simple as ride and run hard.

Got a new headlamp, a Petzl Tikka Plus. I may try it out on a trail run tonight. I will let you know how that works.

Sunday was relatively a chill day. Some housework, but no rigorous outdoor activity. My brain has been re-wired to crave some sort of activity outdoors. So, although not outdoors, I steamed our carpet. Good times!!!

Fish Fry Friday

Not much to report from the family. Barbara and I have been discussing Armstrong's War over emails. It's a fantastic book. She absolutely blew my socks off with some of the questions she had. Kudos Barb!

My Dad was a bachelor last week as my mom attended a women's retreat with the church...I assume eggs or rice and milk for dinner? :)

K and I attended the Maryland Wine Festival last Saturday and then I drove her to the airport on sunday so she could attend her friend's wedding. I know, I know...why didn't I go? Well, I would have had I known her friend was going to back out at the last second. The ticket price wasn't so much the concern, but work has been brutal the past few weeks. My punishment...I couldn't sleep Sunday night.

More on the Maryland Brewer's Oktoberfest:

Featured breweries

  • BREWERY - CAM'S NOTES
  • Baltimore-Washington Beer Works - Yum-dog...the Raven rules!
  • Barley And Hops Grill & Microbrewery - Never been - never had
  • Brewer’s Alley Restaurant & Brewery - The place that started it all for me - Kolsh is delish!
  • Brewer’s Art - Resurrection Ale, please...night, night!
  • Clay Pipe Brewing - I think I had a One and Done...however, there is no hard evidence
  • Clipper City Brewing Company - I've been, but nothing comes to mind
  • DuClaw Brewing Company - OZZY!
  • Ellicott Mills Brewing Co. - No dice
  • Fordham Brewing Co. - some good brews, better music venues
  • Red Brick Station - ehh
  • Ryleigh’s - can't say that I have
  • Summit Station Restaurant & Brewery - Brewer's Alley's little sister and she's naughty!

Live Music Featuring

  • The Bridge - I dunno
  • The Kelly Bell Band - The best party band ever!
  • Kenin - never heard
  • Pale Stars - I think pop-a-billy might be an accurate decsription. The front man, Brandt, played in Greenberry Woods and is a part of Splitsville. And has a terrible time cutting salad.
  • And oompa bands featuring the local favorites The Edelwiess Band!

On The Riding Front

Hoppe and I attacked the Loch Raven trails closest to the bridge or did they attack us. More like, Hoppe's bike. He's looking at getting a whole new drivetrain, because his is now trashed. I on my singlespeed..putted along just fine. I may need to gear down for the next trip there though...too much walking

Run Cameron Run

Another night of trail running at Soldier's Delight. In and out without any run-ins or other issues. I'm beginning to like these runs. Gives me a lot of time to think and varies my workout. I'm beginning to pick up on little techniques as I get more mileage under my belt. I never thought running needed so much technique.

I definitely need to become a stronger runner, so I guess I need to begin a regimented workout program - build the base, intervals, etc.

I also decided that I need to pick up a headlamp sometime in the near future. I'm running out of light - pun intended. I've done a cursory search and am completely unsure what to get, so I am heading to REI to test and get advice. I have a $25 amazon Gift Certificate to burn, but I think I'm going to purchase the headlamp from REI for the return factor. They have an awesome return policy. If you have any suggestions...comment me!

Hittin' the trails with, who else, Hoppe tonight...Surly time! I may rest on Friday, so I am ready for the ride/run on Saturday.

It looks like the October calendar is getting full. My poor wife, she hates that no grass grows beneath my feet. Here's what's on tap (non-bike related):

Frederick's In the Street : October 1st

Oktoberfest: October 15th

Western Maryland College Homecoming (unfortunately known as McDaniel College): October 29th

So honey, if you're reading this, I've spaced these events out...just for you! Of course there will be some sort of bike riding involved with each and every one of these events. Maybe some Gambrill before In the Streets, a Loch ride before the BeerFest and a little Hashawa before Homecoming. Beautiful.

Who turned out the lights?

As mentioned, Hoppe and I hit Loch Raven last night. It felt great to be back on the single dinga albeit a little awkward. The cockpit is slightly more compact than the Sugar, but I got adjusted quickly.

After a quick few mishaps with Hoppe's bike (spilling in front of an SUV and flatting out after crashing over a log whilst bunny-hopping it), we were cruising through the hardpacked singletrack that Loch has to offer.

I believe Hoppe was trying to motivate me by riding behind me, but that got short lived, as I am not a big fan of someone hogging my wheel, especially on rooty sections with a rigid bike. The man is plain ol' fast...I appreciated the gesture, but I had to set him free. Plus, I was pushing that bike as hard as it could go (32x16).

Once we reached the midway point, we headed back....and like that...the lights had been turned off. No more day light to easily navigate our way back to the cars. At this point, Matt had a considerable lead on me and my night vision sucks!! So I amble may way back, like a drunken sailor steering his boat, over the numerous obstacles that never impede my progress under normal circumstances. Throw into the mix a rigid fork and you have a recipe for disaster. I eventually made it out unscathed, but I am definitely rocking the light system next time.

And no, I didn't commute...

Singlespeed Daze!!

It's time to shelf the Sugar and whip out the Surly Flying Monkey (1x1). I've never gone so long without riding her, so she's my sled of choice for the fall/winter. I have a ride scheduled for tonite and Thursday with the living legend himself, Hop. On Saturday, we are attempting our first ride/run. Should be interesting and tiring and exhilarating and tiring. Hopefully I can knock these lyrics out of my head by then:

Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Ain't nothing gonna hold me down
Oh no, I've got to keep on moving
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
I'm running and I won't touch ground
Oh no, I've got to keep on moving

The last run/hike, this was running in my noggin...over and over again. Damn you Matthew Wilder...damn you to hell!

Oh and yes all, I am most definitely commuting tomorrow.

And for your viewing pleasure:

Event filled

UPDATE: (Note: I'm now putting updates at the top of the blog). Just another inspirational tidbit. Lance training in the Pyrenees (read the product description to read quote).

Here's the recap folks:

Friday: Took a half day at work to surprise the ol' wifey for her b-day. Afterwards took a trail run at Soldier's Delight. I thought I was going to do a one lapper at "speed". I was a half mile into the run and here comes this truck up the trail. Mind you this is a hiking only trail and this wasn't a ranger.

I got off to the side of the trail to let the truck pass and the driver stops and rolls down the window. Obviously in distress, I ask if everything is okay and he says his dog passed away. I thought that's too bad, but thought he meant he buried his dog in the woods. After talking to him, I come to find that the pup just died on the trail and he is trying to get the truck to him. I told him that I was doing a lap and would help if needed.

I continued on my run preparing myself for what I was going to see. As I approached there was a lady and her two dogs and this huge dog lying dead next to her. My heart dropped, but my "comfort" side kicked in as I started to get closer. I told her I ran into her friend and said I would help. I now decided to take another lap, so off I went. I was a half mile away from the start before I ran into the guy who was now walking down the trail towards the dog without the truck. No luck, he couldn't get the truck any further into the trail.

So I ran back to my truck and pulled a tarp and ran back to the two grieving hikers. The owner and I rolled the dog onto the tarp and we began to hike him out, but he was just too damn heavy (est. 180-200lbs). I told the guy that we are getting this dog out of here today and we hiked back to the truck. He looked at the 20 yard piece of trail and said no way. I looked at it and said give me the keys.

And like that I was through...nary a problem. He drove the remainder of the way and we put the dog into the truck bed. I stayed to talk to him for a while. He was telling me about the travels he and his pup had...trust me, the dog had a great life, albeit short (4 years). He travelled more in his short life than I. The guy was obviously grief stricken, but said he didn't know how to feel. I told him remember the good times and savor the pictures, which struck a chord. He had just taken pictures that day.

As we were about to part he asked me how he was to re-pay me. I told him that rescuing the dog was payment enough and if you run into a similar situation as I did...help.

I continued to run in the opposite direction. I assume I logged 7-8 miles.

Saturday: I was the designated driver for my wife and her two best friends, as we all headed to the Maryland Wine Festival. I had a great time, but the heat was pretty killer. I did partake in two glasses of wine, but that was about it for the imbibing. The college crowd was younger and I didn't see any of my peers. K, on the other hand saw her whole entire high school, which was great. When the festival was over, we were invited to a party afterwards. I was hoping to hit the Citizen Cope show with my buds, but Kand friends were having too good of a time to end it. Since the party was all of her high school friends, I opted to drive her and her friends over and then head abck to her parents house. I thought she would have a better time not having to worry about me and I got to hang out with her parents. After a while, I got "the" phone call and was on my way to pick them up.

Sunday: Made breakfast, took K to the airport and went for a trail run/hike...all in all 7 miles. The rest of the day I snoozed.

Monday: Work, no commute due to K's return flight, which I told her to bump to an earlier flight if desired. I haven't heard from her since she landed, so I assume an 8PM pick-up.

Damn the Man!

Many late nights at work have definitely side tracked my AR training and commuting efforts. I hope I can get on track soon. I am hitting the bridge-side of Loch Raven with fellow Draggin', Hoppe. It will be his first to the 'other side'.

And I am teetering on whether or not to commute tomorrow. I need to get a haircut and most importantly it is my wife's B-Day. Priorities have been a bitch lately. Either way I'll get a ride or run in!!

Sorry, not much more to comment on.

Long weekend

OK, so it was only the normal "two-day variety" weekend. On Saturday, I woke up with pup in tow and set off on a 5-mile hike. I thought this would be a great opportunity to get some training in for the adventure race and also get my pup out and about...Kill two birds with one stone. Well, these two birds were cast quite early in the day as myself and Cobi Joan. We were hiking in contained woods with 3 miles worth of trails. The trails were blazed horribly. And the story goes, we got lost trying to find our way out of Soldier's Delight. 8-10 miles later we found or way back to the Jeep.

Highlights:

  • Saw old chronium mining shafts. Baltimore was the first to mine chronium and produce chrome...I never knew that. Cobi was more anxious than I to explore the shafts/caves, so next time I'm bringing a flashlight.
  • Put the Xterra backpack to good use. Packed it with two 3lb weights and some additional clothing. Then I proceeded to pack the helmet carrier with rocks for additional weight.
  • There was some sort of Native Indian ceremony, but I couldn't find where it was coming from. I heard the beating of drums and chants. Pretty neat.
  • Cobi Joan finally figured out she was a dog. By mile 6ish we came upon a stream where she dove right into and drank from. She did Papa proud!
  • Don't always trust the trail map. I would swear that there are more trails cut throughout the original Soldier's Delight trails.

On Sunday, I did some house cleaning and then hit the Ravens game with my buddy Keith. we went with a local watering hole who supplied food, beer and transportation. It was a fun time, but my body doesn't do so well the next day after an extravaganza like that. Oy vay. I think I'll stick to watching the game from home. Don't get me wrong it was fun...too much fun...Ouch my head!

See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!

Re-commitment

I hope the "on again-off again" routine doesn't become commonplace in regards to my commuting. I had a perfect storm of late work nights and evening commitments taking me away from the bike recently. But with the increasing gas prices (I never had the pump stop at $50.00 before, I thought that was an urban legend) and my Adventure Race aspirations, I have brought in next weeks work clothes and I am tweaking the bike. I'm doing this damn thing!!!

If I could feasibly ride every workday I would save $2,400 in gas money alone. That's a sweet ass bike! At the rate I'm riding (3 out of five days) I would save $1,440, which is a great down payment. I need to figure out a decent goals and rewards system, I think I work better that way. Obviously there are intangible rewards, but my dumb little brain is wired for the tangible benefits. The bicycle marketing gods that be, you won this time...you've got me cornered into the world of "There's cooler stuff out there!" DAMN YOU!!!

Watch out for me blazing the roads of B-more county...seriously watch out and give me my space!

Cam out!

NEWSFLASH: In other news, I recently assisted in the purchase of a new bicycle that my company was sending to a fellow employee in Pascagoula, MS. The benefits for working with a fleet leasing company is that we were also able to score a demo vehicle for him as well. Toyota let us use a Prius from their demo pool. Our transportatioin company drove the Prius with the Trek locked safely in the trunk. I can only imagine that the driver felt like a steak amongst a pack of wolves as he drove the 50+ mile per gallon car through the hurricane zone. Our c0-worker stated that there wasn't an operating gas station within 100-200 miles. The Prius will come in very handy. His wife is also enjoying the use of the bike to run local errands. She is also riding for leisure to due to the lack of electricity, etc. Hopefully it is an escape in an otherwise desparate situation. It's a Trek Cruiser with a front loading basket to help with errands. He told us not to worry about a helmet, so we sent one :)

Adventure Racing...here I come!

I always try to set goals for myself. It's the only way I can motivate my big butt off the couch to do something more productive with my life instead of watching the idiot box. After college I didn't have the infrastructure to keep myself as active as I'd like (free gym, tons of buddies, intramurals, girl chasing...yada, yada, yada), so I fell into a terrible cycle of work, eating poorly and drinking beers. I still kept relatively active, but the bulge started to creep in. I was going to the gym, mountain biking and running on an irregular basis...they were no longer a priority.

Well, after the loss of my brother I needed to find a venue for release and I needed it bad. There was a huge void in my life and I needed something to not so much fill it, but soothe it. So I decided to concentrate on mountain biking. My dad picked me up by boot straps and hauled my ass to the bike shop. He said if I was doing this, I was doing it right. I went home with my first real mountain bike...a Gary Fisher Sugar 2. Well, the next few month you couldn't get me off the machine and I had new buddies that ensured that I hit the trails. I now had a mission...to race in a 24 hour race. The players were set and the goal was ultimately achieved. I've been mountain biking ever since.

Recently, a buddy of mine lost his mother who was also a good friend to me...the whole family is good to me. She fought a long tough battle with cancer and it ultimately won. Needless to say there's a void in my buddy's life. He sent an email a few days after his mom passed away asking who wanted to do an Adventure Race. It sounded a lot like my situation (although he is a seasoned racer). This could be his reprieve from the emotions that he is experiencing...heck, it will be therapeutic for me too. Well, not one to let my friends go through things alone...I threw down the gauntlet. I'm here for my friend and how dare I waste my life on my couch gorging myself, when I can test, extend and possibly break myself while I have the chance.

So, now here I am. WTF did I get myself into? And how the hell do I train for this. I have the biking thing down, but running, swimming, kayaking, rappelling, orienteering...oy vay. So what's a guy to do? Find the experts and get schooled. As we speak, I am compiling a list of event experts ( a marathoner who qualified for Boston, a D-1 swimmer, a rodeo kayaker, and an old Army grunt who was thrown into a foreign jungle...haven't figured out the rappelling part...maybe an ROTC instructor). Hopefully these guys will give me some key training advice and hopefully some motivation.

It's on like Donkey Kong!

Twenty-Fo Hour Shin-dizzle

So we finally got to go on our much anticipated Biking Camp Trip to Gambrill State Park. We were a little worried about the confining camp spaces and the anal campsite supervisor, but once we gurgled a few cold ones, the trip was put into cruise control. Here are the stats:

Number of attendees: 5 (Hoppe, Volk, Toby, Phenomajon and myself...Jimmie, we missed ya and can't wait to rock out next time)

Number of beers: ?

Length of Hoppe's sausage: 3 ft (it's turkey and you have a dirty mind)

Number of night laps around the campground loop: 4...try doing it without lights...not fun.

Number of words Toby said that I didn't understand: TONS

Number of mountain bike rides: 3

Number of times Volk observed the same rock on different laps: 2

Number of jerseys that I had that matched someone elses: three...go team!

Number of times Volk personally inspected the terrafirma or other natural obstacles: ?

Number of weeks Volk is going to have to wait to be the number one stunner on his Santa Cruz: many + the 12 weeks he's already waited.

Number of miles: guessing over 30 miles.

Amount of fun: ENDLESS

The terrain was more technical than I remembered but it was a fantastic trip. We slept under the stars and ate really well. What more can I say?

All work and no play

Not really, but I haven't posted in quite some time due to a high volume of work traffic and other worldly duties. But my word is bond. I will start posting at least some jibberish everyday, if I'm around a computer. I don't have time now but here are some future topics:
  • The 24 Hour After Party - Camp/Bike trip.
  • Write-ups on my stable of steeds
  • My kick-ass weed wacker
  • To adventure race or not to adventure race - there's no question
  • Upping the not-so-daily commutes to daily

Until next time, stay classy, readers!

Perfect

Good ride on Saturday with my boys Hoppe and Toby. Haven't had the Tob-man out on the trails for over 3 weeks. Unfortunately the chain on his single speed didn't want any part of being on the trail and exploded midway through. We tried a trail side fix and someone even gave us a master link but unfortunately the existing link was beyond repair and the link was SRAM not Shimano. Hoppe and I finished the ride in record time to meet Toby back at the car. However, at the end of our ride we split up. On the way back to the car I ran into a raccoon, not literally. This little guy was hunched and ready to fight as I came to a skidding stop. Needless to say, I was scared. I waited the little guy out for two or three minutes before he decided to Lolly-gag off into the woods.

After we all got back to the cars we headed to Chipotle for some burritos and then to Silver Spring for a couple beers. What a perfectly enjoyable afternoon. We were deciding whether to go back out on the trails or not, but we opted or one more beer instead.

I also hit up Trader Joe's for some groceries and made the discovery of a lifetime. They sell Usinger's!!!! Hell yeah!!!

The end of the day had me cooking meatball sammies on Ciabatti bread for my wife, who's headache was subsiding. A perfect ending to the perfect day.

Oh, the 24 hour camping trip is on for this weekend at Gambrill, so if you are reading this and want to attend, let a brotha know!

Lazy Arse

I haven't hopped on a bike since Tuesday...so much for the "what are you on" motto. I pick up my wheel from Performance tonight, so I might take a quick OM loop. Tomorrow we are hitting Loch Raven for a morning ride. Ahh....back in the saddle again.

It looks like the 24 Hour After Party is set for Labor Day weekend at Gambrill State Park....shweet! Should be a blast.

It has been recommended that I do a write up a my bikes with pictures (thanks Crankenstein). Coming forthwith, I will create the dossiers for my stable of steeds. Stay tuned.

If you want a good write up on the Single Speed World Championships 2005, a local rider has a fantastic summary and other pertinent links here. Not your typical race structure, but a great race with a huge following. I might have attended if I weren't maxin' and relaxin' at the OBX. Although all 402 race slots filled up within 24 hours, I believe.

What are you on?

"This is my body. And I can do with it whatever I want with it. I can push it. Tweak it. Study it. Listen to it. Everybody wants to know what I'm on. What am I on? I'm on my bike busting my ass six hours a day. What are you on?" - LANCE

That's a great quote. Something to live up to. Step it up, son!

I was on the Loch Raven Trails. Hoppe and Volk put on a show last night at Loch Raven. Hoppe again showing strong and Volk showing what he's always had but never displayed...an unmatched flow on the bike. Makes this kid want/need to get on his bike every breathing second.

I was on my bike, gloveless. A good time was had other than the fact that I forgot my gloves. Forget a piece of equipment and figure out why you really need it. Sweat + Rubber = Slip and Slide. My forearms worked double time to keep grip ending up in both forearm and hands cramps. I'm not sure what the deal was yesterday but I had a bad showing.

I was on my bed reading. A lot. Still reading Angels and Demons. Last night I picked the book up around 10:30 and when I went to bed the clock read 4:00. That will hurt today, but damn the book is good.

YESTERDAY'S RIDE: Mountain - Loch Raven Seminary

Distance: 10ish
Conditions: Weather was beautiful, trails were dry except for a few locations.

A lesson in being a hero

What? Two articles in one day? Well, you daily readers deserve it, plus I got a wild hair.

Just read an article written by Ben Stein about his adjusted attitude towards the definition of stars. Once used to be the Hollywood-type but a life change altered his views towards family, local peace officers and our troops overseas.

I know a guy who actually signed up to fight for our freedom in a time it wasn't the thing to do - during Vietnam. The definition of a true star.

The guy on the lower right is my pop.

I got nothin'

I went to Performance to get the wheel fixed. They told me September 9th, I told them "how about a new rear wheel?", they said does Wednesday work, I said yes. So it looks like my next commute will be Thursday or Friday or both. The good thing is that they honored their word. That bumps them up the list of places I like.

So I was riding my bike from my basement to my truck and snap! The chain broke again. So off to the bike shop for a new chain. I think the link was seized from the last fix and it couldn't stand the torque. I will be riding Loch tonite come hell or high water and if Hoppe has anything to say then it will only be hindered by hell coming forthwith.

Other news...I started reading Angels and Demons, the prequel to The DaVinci Code. It's a pretty good read. I've been on a reading kick since the beach. I also revved up my new weed wacker...gas powered, 2 stroke goodness. If I'm not careful I may cut my house down. I started around 7:45 last night, the bad boy is LOUD, so I opted to wait until a better time. It's louder than my lawn mower for chrissakes! [Insert Tim the Toolman grunt]

Kuh-Rah-Luh

Back from Carolla, NC...did ya miss me? It was a long overdue vacation. Thanks Ma & Pa for another great time! For you bikers out there...the weather was great and the roads long and flat....tasty! I logged a little over 100 miles....the majority done on my trusty commuter steed and the remainder on a beach cruiser. Yes Keith, you do have a tale-tell crack sign and I beat you in the first annual Beach Cruiser Classic. Brush up your skills son!

The first couple days had my parents, my wife and dog lounging around the pool and enjoying each others' company. Then my buddy Keith and his wife, Becca made their way down after a pretty hectic weekend. My Aunt Barbara came down for a couple days and then my Aunt Dixie and Uncle Butch came for the remainder of the week.

Here is the list (easier than writing everything, but you'll get the idea):
  • Long morning bike rides stopping at fruit stands instead of gulping energy gels
  • Longer pool lounge sessions
  • Margaritas
  • Stripers
  • Beers with my pop at the old Weeping Radish
  • The perfect morning cup o' joe with my mom watching the ocean from our deck
  • Red Stripes and Coronas
  • Crab feastin'
  • Life is Good
  • Outer Barks' Yappy Hour with Cobi Joan
  • North Beach and waves that hear you taunt them
  • Beach Cruiser Classic
  • Grilling anything that moved
  • Afternoon naps
  • Early to bed, early to rise
  • Good family and friends
  • Jimmy and Jack all the time!

It was definitely a new experience with everyone there and it will force us to "plan" things a little better, but I wouldn't want it any other way.

Oh, I also read Lance Armstrong's War...great read...recommended!

Okay, I'm out...EtD Crew get your bikes dialed in....I need to ride dirt pronto!!

P.S. - the Monday commute will be put on hold. Hopefully I will be back in action on Wednesday. My rear wheel blew a spoke. Performance Bike better be ready to fulfill their promise!

Fish Fry Friday

OK family people don't hold back. I know you are reading, so send me your updates! I'm gonna fry fish on friday regardless, but it would be nice to add some girth to this column. Barbara is leading the pack in responsiveness...Kudos!

So Barbara has qualified the age old ANSWERED question, custard is in fact better than ice cream. After taste testing the butter pecan ice cream at Dumser's in Ocean City she surmised that nothing touches Kopp's Custard...period. I think she knew that going in, but I would like to join her on the expert panel of judges. Kopp's, if you hear this, please send dozens of pints of custard to the easy coast...pronto!

The parents are heading down to Williamsburg and start their vacation early. I believe they are staying at the Colonial Inn and touring the town. It is a far cry from one of their first anniversaries when they stayed at the Scotch Inn in Williamsburg.

Speaking of vacation, we are crossing or fingers that Irene pushes further out to sea. Everyone, at 2pm start blowing east :)

Mind your Manners

"You don't matter, so I won't mind" - seems to be the war call for some motorists out there. During my tenure as a bike commuter I have witnessed some rather ridiculous drivers on the roadways. It makes me wonder if that's how I drive - scary. People fiddling with their radios, dialing on their cellphones, even facing to talk to people in the rear seats - these are all the things that run through my mind as I pedal down the backroads to work.

I have set up some rules for myself, however, to ensure that people see me on the road and have no choice, but to slow down or take notice. If I hear/see a car in the distance, I will creep into the middle of the lane. When the driver gets closer and I have a gut feeling they've taken notice, I will resume riding on/near the shoulder. This isn't an effort to piss drivers off, but to make them aware that we belong here too. There are numerous "Share the Road" signs, but they are few and far between and serve as a reminder to only a handful of drivers (typically riders themselves, I presume).

Let us not forget the good guys too. The drivers who wait to pass after blind corners, take the other lane when they can, slow down when they pass you, and honk/wave/shout "Venga, Venga, Venga" after they pass you. The latter is the reason I am giving my Driver of the Day award to my boss. I was half way home and a car slowly passes by, giving ample room and after she passed gave a quick honk. Perfect! No, I'm not brown-nosing - she doesn't read my blog - but if she would have buzzed me or honked at me from behind she would have heard it from me! In fact, I'm going to tell her what a great job she did - reinforcement!

TODAY'S RIDE: Mountain Bike, Loch Raven Seminary
(Last chance to ride sweet singletrack before vacation)

Distance: approx. 10 miles

The riding was great, but hot. The typical players were out in force. Hoppe showed his usual high energy performance and Volk was till having troubles with the bike...mainly staying on, but always with the best attitude. We had one major mechanical which was fixed trailside. As I was climbing a short burst hill I broke my chain and almost took out my family! I hoofed my bike up the remaining hill and we started fixing the chain. After wrangling with the chain for 15 minutes, we finally fixed her up. She actually rolled a lot better too...go figure.

Terrell Owens is a jackass. Thank god the Ravens didn't get him. Reason 5,402. The football season is upon us. Kegs of the world beware!!! Brats, you better watch your back, too!

Don't forget to check these guys out...TransRockies' nut jobs :)

Ride Sally Ride...

This has been my longest hiatus off the bike in months! Four days!! I finally hopped back on the steed this morning for a nice commute to Fort PHH. I missed the "after" buzz. The legs have a slight pulsing sensation, the lungs feel clean, the mind is strong....an all over good, healthy buzz. Time for some Cytomax to ensure that I don't crash like a junkie! I haven't been using it long enough to give a good review.

The Honey Stingers are working well. I'm not sure whether Honey Stinger gel or Hammer Gel is the best bang for the buck. If I was forced to give a review I would probably lean towards Hammer (raspberry goes down easy). Although I have been toying with Peanut Butter and Honey Stinger sammies for long tours.

TODAY'S RIDE: Commute

T-minus 4 days and counting

I watched the shuttle land this morning. Absolutely amazing. Other than that, I don't have much to report. Other than I will be heading to the OBX this Saturday.

I'm starting to slack off...must go ride...or hit up the Cyclo-Core DVD (ouchy). Planned on mountain biking with Hop, but the trails are soggy from the rain. Must give the trails a breather. Maybe I'll hit up an OM loop tonight.

TRANSROCKIES. Check out one of the world's most gruelling mountain bike endurance events. Race Face is supporting two grass roots race teams (a father/son and two friends) during the TransRockies event in Canada. It's a seven day race in the fashion of the Tour de France. Follow along at here.

ENTER THE DRAGGIN. The design has been set and the gear will soon commence, once we can get our heads around what we'll want.

THIS JUST IN....

Chris Eatough is nutty! He wins the Wilderness 101 on Saturday and the Fairmont Park Mid-Atlantic Super Series Race on Sunday. In contrast, I partied on Saturday and slept on Sunday...I'm pathetic!! Read the report here (not the report on me being pathetic...jackass).

Rip van Cameron

I slept...alot...yesterday. I took the day off of riding today. Bahhhh! Trade-offs for having a good weekend. I hope to get some road time in tonight and hopefully our Tuesday ride at Loch will go off. For now, here are some links to peruse, 'cuz I got nothin':

Dirt Rag - a good moutain bike forum, a better magazine...for all cyclists
One Less Car - MD-based commuter/pedestrian advocacy group
SSWC05 - The Single Speed World Championships are in the U.S., close to Pittsburgh...I'll be at the beach...priorities.
Single Speed Outlaw - a local singlespeed guru.
Ram's Head Live - If you don't catch a show here, you're missing out.
Jack Johnson - If you miss his show, you're missing out.
Ben Harper - Best show I've ever been too. Amazing.

Oh K made some Curried Chicken...tasty. It's amazing...she rarely cooks...and every time she does, she's like a seasoned chef (no pun intended). Tonight I don the chef's hat.

American Idol and Barry Manilow????

Your secret is safe for now.

Last night was a freaking blast. We ended up at Ram's Head Live in Baltimore to see Marc Broussard. Kand I arrived around 6:30 to grab a bite to eat before everyone came. Then Wilson arrived with Mandy in tow and right behind them Hoppe and Lisha. The cast of characters were set.

Onto the show. The venue was fantastic and easily ranks in the top five places to see a concert. Easy access to bars and food, multiple levels and fantastic acoustics. There were two opening acts, which both were solo acoustic. Unfortunately it was background noise, because I was catching up with my buddies. We headed to the floor level when Marc Broussard started. A four man front came out and I knew then and there that we were about to have a good time. And a good time was had. Broussard's vocals were deep and soulful...which I didn't think was going to happen...sometimes I like being wrong. The lead guitar player was an animated whirlwind and played the hell out of his instrument. Wilson swore up and down that the other guitarist was the secret ingredient. The whole band was freakin' great and they put on a high energy show.

God I love good music.

But what I like more is good friends. And last night was an awesome example of my world's colliding...in a good way. On one side, dancing with his woman, was Wilson. We haven't hung out or talked at any length for months. When I saw him in the bar we picked up where we left off...which is how it always works. He's from the old guard. A group of buddies that have hung out since high school and have weathered time and distance apart and still remain strong.

On my other side, groovin' with his wife, was Hoppe. I've known him since college but haven't really started hanging out until a couple months ago. In a word, and I'll probably get an earful for this, he's passionate. In whatever he's doing he's doing it 100% and loving every second of it. Whether it's biking , music, art, etc.

Good food, good music, good friends...it's like a Hallmark Card with beer added to the fun!

Because I knew my ears wouldn't be ringing sufficiently enough in the morning, Kev, Mandy, K and I headed to Howl at the Moon, the dueling piano "loud box" that I usually call Foul at at the Moon. K adores the place so I'll be nice. Well, I walked out of there hoarse, so I guess I shouldn't complain, but that is my annual visit...I'm not due until another 12 months.

Now is that my phone or my ears??

I need to hop on my bike and ride now...

Saturday is for Fightin'....

....off Friday night :) Had a good time down in Federal Hill. I headed out with Keith and Becca and a group of their friends. The group included some WMC alums, which was great - talking about old times. They were a bit before my time but we definitely had some common friends, etc.

K went out to an extended dinner with her best friends in Westminster. I would write more, but she is presently unavailable for comment.

Tonight we are headed to Ram's Head Live to see a show - Marc Broussard(?). Hoppe is promising a good show, so we'll see.

RIDING ALONG

The question was asked, what do I lug back and forth on my commute to work? Well, I have the good fortune of a locker room and showers at work, so I typically leave shoes, pants, towels and some toiletries at work.

Here's what I've been haulin':
  • Two Tubes
  • Tire Irons - but they are plastic, go figure.
  • CO2 pump and cartridges
  • multi-tool
  • cell phone - life saver a week ago
  • under clothes (boxers not briefs, ladies)
  • Shirt for the work day
  • Pair of shorts - it's awkward walking in the building in spandex shorts and then getting stopped to talk. Now I know what the ladies feel like when guys aren't looking directly in their eyes.
  • Rain Jacket - I've been stuck one too many times without
  • Food (Lunch, gels, etc)

Fish Fry Friday

Not much family info came trickling in as I had first thought it would. I did have the pleasure of visiting with my Aunts Linda and Barbara in Arlington, VA on Saturday. It was great to hear the stories of my cousins and what not. Sounds like Nick is getting ready to enjoy his senior year at Colorado College after spending time in Italy. Carly and Crystal will be college buddies at U of Wisconsin. Maybe they will pick up the torch where Linda and Barbara left off. God help the good ol' U of W :)

After a great meal made by the expert hands of Barbara, we discussed other goings-ons including the Tour. Barbara has been enjoying riding her bike on the paths on Arlington/DC, including the 4th of July where she was forced to take a drink out of her water bottle at a police checkpoint. Thinking the officers were being helpful based on her strenous workout, she later realized that they only wanted her to take a gulp to ensure it wasn't explosive...HAHAHA! You work for the government all your life and now they make you drink the Kool-Aid...I thought it was the other way around :)

Linda ended her visit with a brief jaunt up to Bethany Beach in Delaware with Barbara. Not a bad way to wrap things up and I believe the weather was nice next to the ocean.

Oh, I ran into this guy and his lovely wife (AKA Dad and Mom)

TODAY'S RIDE: Commute

Morning
Distance: 14.1
Time: 0:49:29
Avg. Speed: 17 mph
Conditions: High 70's, slightly humid

I broke 50 minutes again!! This time I had a heavy load due to casual Friday. The additional load included shoes and jeans, which doesn't sound like a lot, but I definitely felt it on some of the climbs. Last night I invested in a dozen Honey Stinger packets. They treated me well so far...I love me some honey. I also bought Cytomax singles for recovery. Only time will tell with those.

Looking forward to cutting out of work early and rolling home...maybe I'll take some detours. It's Friday...what the hell!

Evening
Distance: 14.1 plus a little trek around the backroads of Glyndon Proper.
Time: 0:59:01
Avg Speed: 14.3
Conditions: Hot and Humid, mid-90's, on the verge of raining

I indeed took it easy on the way home. I tried to enjoy the scenery which there is a lot of on Belfast and Butler. I wish I had my camera, but now I know what shots I would like to get. Plus I don't think I could have carried much more.

Hoppe is working his magic on the EtD logo. We have retired the Bruce Lee images to the Singletrack of Fame based on possible copyright issues that could arise. We don't need none of that!!! Check out Hops site, 7MC to spy some of the new logos (in the first post).

Legs of Steel

As in, they feel like they weigh as much as steel. Last night's ride was, as I imagined, tough! I think I reached the "over-trained" level by not giving the ol' legs the proper rest they need. Maybe I came out of the chute too strong. Maybe I need to re-evaluate my nutrition, as mentioned yesterday. Hopefully the latter is the case. Tomorrow I will be trying the "gel" method. I also need to look into proper recovery nutrition, as I think that is something I desperately lack.

Yesterday was not a total bust, however. Although I thought I was going snail slow, I actually came in around my average time. Slow and steady? I rocked up the hill into Glyndon, which shows me that I need to examine where I need to put in various levels of effort on my route. I'm also still tinkering with my cadences, gearing, etc. Soon I will be blazing the roads!

My buddy, Hoppe, is working on a "team" site, called Enter the Draggin (after our 24 hour team) as you read this blog. It is a place where a circle of friends can share info, pics, etc. regarding their passions - mtb, snowboarding, ski, skateboarding, music and art. He has created the homepage and new logo. Pretty awesome!

THIS JUST IN: A picture of my travelling exploits has risen to the surface. How do cruise ships expect to give safety discussions when they give us life vests with whistles?? Oh...and booze. (Cast of characters: Front L to R - My bro-in-law, Justin and his buddy; Back L to R - myself and my father-in-law who doesn't appear to be having a good time :)

Godfather of Roll

I think my legs are starting to revolt. Today's morning ride was a test of intestinal fortitude. Every hill was like a Hors Category climb. I switched my riding style up a bit and rolled the middle ring at a decent cadence. It worked considering my situation because I came in around my average time.

I also may have to re-think my pre-ride nutrition. It's hard to get up and force feed before a ride, but the calories are absolutely crucial. My stomach is pretty testy, so I can't just eat anything. I scarfed down a Clif Bar this morning...wrong answer. I may have to rely on gels instead. Hammer Gel and the oh so yummy Honey Stinger gels have treated me right. I also need to find a palatable energy drink to switch up the monotony of water.

After the Loch ride last evening, I got home and did the usual post-ride rituals (put bike away, shower, yada, yada, yada). When I got out of the shower my wife had a plate of hot roast beef and gravy with mac and cheese ready to be dealt with. After thinking I was going to die on the trails and then seeing this beautiful delicacy before me, I thought I had indeed gone to Heaven. It hit the spot and definitely put this kid to bed with a smile on his face!

Karma-dy

Funny "HA", not funny "HA-HA". The bee family exacted its revenge on me after the mass murder of one of its sects. As I was loading my bike on top of my car yesterday I felt a burning sensation coming from my stomach. I thought it was from the heat of the car door. As I backed away from the vehicle the sensation continued. Sure enough, a bee flew out of my jersey and I was left with a quarter-sized welt on my belly!

The good news is that the nests in front of my house are gone. Mission Accomplished. And not in the George Bush/Naval Ship kind of "Accomplished". The buggers are gone and I can freely walk in and out of our house without the eminent threat of swarms of bees.

OPERATION: BUZZ OFF

TODAY'S RIDE: Mountain Bike, Loch Raven - Seminary Trail

Distance: approx. 10 miles
Conditions: Blazing Hot. Period.

Hoppe put on a clinic today...no doubt about it...the kid is legit. He can go for days and has definitely set a new bar for my usual cast of characters. A long overdue raise...IMO. Ride Hard or Ride Home. I like it. I may have to throw it on a t-shirt!

My bike is having the same shifting issues which I hope to resolve tomorrow night with some TLC. Sorry Sugar Mama...Daddy hasn't been treating you right, but Dr. Phenomajon has been MIA!

Attack of the Killer Cee!

OPERATION: BUZZ OFF
STATUS: ACTIVE

Yup, the tables have been turned. The bees have been dealt their first and hopefully final blow. Time will tell. As the sun set over the burg of Owings Mills, I equipped myself with a little bug spray, two patio pavers, and some makeshift armor. I knew it was going to be a difficult mission because I had to plunge into enemy territory. I had to squeeze into a tight space between my house and front bushes.

With my wife outside (FAR AWAY) - keys in hand - I was ready to attack. The first ground assualt was flooding the nearest bee hole with bug spray. After a close call with an enemy bomber (and me running away screaming like a little girl), I was able to secure the hole with a paver. The toughest mission was forthcoming. I had to spray the furthest hole and jump between the bushes and place the second paver over the bee's lair. Spray, Spray, Spray and with the grace of a bull I dove between the bushes and quickly jumped out. Unfortunately, the mission wasn't without problems. Before I jumped out I smacked my knee on the water spigot...which may have led Commander K to think Special Ops Chesnik was hit. Thankfully that wasn't the case.

This morning's commute was great. The temps were in the low 70's and not too many vehicles on the roads - not that there are usually that many. The Conti Gatorskins felt great on the road. I could feel a little difference regarding drag, but I had more confidence with the wider tires. I also logged a quicker time and the load I was carrying in the mess. bag was heavier than usual. Not sure what the deal was, but I am not complaining.
